Memories Reimagined

Film photography captivated me with its ability to capture intricate nuances of human body language and dynamic interactions. I shot candid photographs of people around me, including loved ones, strangers, and personal intimate relationships. I was particularly drawn to capturing the essence of love and community through movement. Through cross-medium experimentation, I developed a self-taught oil painting technique that enables me to extend the lens further than the eye can see. My intention is that each artwork evokes a sense of nostalgia, finding beauty in the mundane.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Sofia Laabouki is a self-taught emerging artist whose work is inspired by analog photography and nostalgia. Her practice encompasses figurative paintings of daily life scenes and mixed media. She began her artistic journey as a film photographer in 2017 and later transitioned to oil painting in 2020. Each artwork is derived from intimate scenes of characters interacting with one another, empowering viewers to focus on the deeper aspects of the subjects. Through her artistic endeavors, Sofia candidly explores the vulnerabilities she has experienced as the younger sibling, aunt, and daughter.
